Using the original serial number records at E.S. Ritchie we were able to trace the date of manufacture to November 24th 1869. It was sold to T.S. Negus & Co. of New York. According to the records it came back to Ritchie for repair on June 2nd 1908. This compass is an excellent example of an early fluid filled Ritchie compass. We were able to preserve the original hand painted interior and refill it with the alcohol and water mixture that it was designed to be filled with. The beautiful eight sided mahogany box was hand made in our wood shop to compliment this incredible compass. ser2913 Detail of Compass Serial Number 002
